Old Parliament House, Canberra
Old Parliament House Canberra is the splendid venue for the 18th Symposium of Australian Gastronomy, to be held from 13th – 16th May 2011. The resonance of this heritage building set in Canberra’s national precinct prompted the 2011 theme The Federation of Taste, in turn producing an intriguing range of papers.
The opening of Parliament House in Canberra in May 1927 completed the work of federating six Australian colonies into one nation and the national capital became the seat of government.
The opening reception for the Symposium will be held in elegant Kings Hall, with the adjoining House of Representatives chamber the venue for the debate to follow.
After the new Parliament House was completed in 1988, the graceful Old Parliament House became a heritage site and now houses the Museum of Australian Democracy.
The Museum of Australia Democracy is a major sponsor of the 18th Symposium of Australian Gastronomy. Please take the opportunity to visit the Museum.
The 18th Symposium also offers a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes of the former Parliament House as well as to enjoy this national heritage building and its beautiful setting.
On Saturday papers will be presented in former committee rooms, with lunch in the House of Representatives courtyard.
The Symposium Banquet will take place in the grand Members Dining Room, with pre-dinner drinks in Kings Hall.
On Sunday, papers will be presented in the Members Dining Room and lunch in the Senate Rose Gardens.
Our farewell breakfast on Monday morning will transform the parliamentary kitchens into a lively and busy place.
